Christian Wedel
(1985) San José, Costa Rica
Christian develops a multidisciplinary practice that spans drawing, ceramics, painting, and sculpture, grounded in the dense, immersive ecosystems of the tropical rainforest. His work explores the entanglement of humans, plants, and materials through projects such as Livable Worlds, Tropical Futurology, and A Town for Plant People, creating spaces of interspecies intimacy and speculative hospitality beyond anthropocentric paradigms.
He has participated in both solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Cero Uno, Costa Rica (2024); Galería Municipal, Querétaro (2024); Studio Croma, Mexico City (2023); the Costa Rican Art Museum (2021); and the art fair Salón ACME, Mexico City (2025). His work was also featured in Seguimos: Contemporary Art in Costa Rica at Craig Krull Gallery, Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA (2024–25), and in the group exhibition Territorios Liminales, Project Room, Peana, Mexico City (2025), reflecting his growing international presence.
He completed a residency at Cero Uno, Costa Rica (2024), and has received various grants and institutional support, including competitive funding from the Costa Rican Art Museum for the exhibition Livable Worlds (2021). In the same year, he developed the project Tropical Futurology in collaboration with the Organization for Tropical Studies, with support from the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. He was also awarded support from the Cultural Center of Spain to realize A Town for Plant People (2020). In 2023, he developed the editorial project Cuarto veinte veintitrés with the support of the graphic self-publishing workshop La Diabla at TEOR/éTica.
