DESVELADO 24, Jesse Baez

Turning waiting into visible matter and time into the protagonist. This was the objective of Desvelado 24, a performance that inaugurated the independent phase of musician Jesse Baez (b. Chicago, 1988).

For twenty-four hours, Baez remained awake inside the gallery space, carrying out the everyday activities that shaped his creative process. The gesture sought to point to the contradiction between the apparent solemnity of a museographic space and the lack of freedom it actually contains. The action could be observed by those who came to the site, inviting the viewer to confront an essential question: what happens when the artist is present, but the work finds no outlet?

The action entered into dialogue with Time Clock Piece by Tehching Hsieh, in which time and physical endurance become the work itself. In this case, the vigil represented the years of waiting Baez endured in order to release Desvelado, a song that evolved from a simple cover into a symbol of his trajectory and of the limitations imposed by the industry.

The performance sought to make visible exhaustion, resistance, and the transition toward a new phase. As a consequence of the vigil, once the twenty-four hours were completed, Desvelado was finally released. Exiting the cube and entering the world occurred simultaneously, marking the beginning of an independent chapter in the artist’s career.
