Noir Animal, Christian Wedel

Noir Animal marks the inaugural exhibition of Ovni Gallery, a solo presentation by Chris Wedel, featuring works developed in collaboration with Panorammma Atelier. The exhibition explores primal memory and unconscious desire through painting and sculpture.

The world that unfolds in Wedel’s work is not a human world, though perhaps one we once inhabited. It belongs to the realm of the unconscious, to a wildness we have long sought to suppress. And yet, it continues to call to us, persistent like the slow dripping of an ancient, muted voice. A voice that urges us to recall a forgotten language.

Wedel speculates through fiction, moved by a deep desire to inhabit other bodies, other times, other ecosystems. His work invites a communion with the forces we have been taught to fear, yet which also shape who we are. At the heart of this darkness lies an unresolved question:

Is the guardian protecting its world, or inviting us into its traps?

The artist evokes an animal sensuality, a primal eroticism that emerges through form, texture, and viscosity. There is an attraction to the natural, a will to merge, an impulse to make another body; human, animal, or vegetal, a place of home.

What his work offers is a shadowed mirror, as blurred as a dream, where we glimpse our wildest and most essential self. It corresponds to an aesthetic sensibility described by Theodor Adorno, in which the subject is not pleased through self-recognition, but rather led into an experience that brings awareness of their own finitude. It is “a warning of the liquidation of the self, which, shaken, comes to understand its own limitation.”
